With so much to do and the ability to access technology at our fingertips 24/7, one would think that young people are now happier than ever before, right? Well, research has shown the opposite. The truth is that more young people are struggling with anxiety and depression than ever before. Why is that? At CBT Counseling Centers, this is something that hits home with the teens and children that we counsel. There are legitimate reasons as to why young people are struggling more with anxiety and depression and we’d like to share some of the reasons with our clients today.
Lack of Resources
Some children and teens dealing with anxiety and depression have the support around them to properly manage these illnesses. Other children do not. At CBT Counseling Centers, we aim to be that resource for any child or young adult that enters our doors. The sad news, however, is that many young adults have a lack of resources around them to get the therapy and/or medication to help them lead a normal life that is not impacted by anxiety and depression. Young adults often lack access to mental health treatment centers. Others never pursue help in fear that they’ll be judged by their peers or even their employers.
Impact of Social Media
In a matter of seconds while on social media, you begin to see pictures and images of people that seem like they have everything put together, and it often seems like they are living the perfect life. Social media can be very misleading, but to a young person, it’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly yearning for more in hopes of achieving the lifestyle of someone else. Studies have shown that the less family focused lifestyles that young people are living this day in age is a key reason for the increase in anxiety and depression. Constantly comparing yourself to others and yearning for the American dream to have more and more and more is a key driver of these negative feelings.
Reliance on Medication
Nowadays, medical providers are quick to prescribe an antidepressant to a young adult that is struggling with anxiety and depression. Rather than addressing the core issues, this medication simply provides a temporary bandage around what’s really going on with the individual. Instead of relying so heavily on medication, considering a more holistic approach such as effective counseling could help develop a much greater long term result.
